- Read each row and column clue as a sequence of filled groups. Leave at least one empty square between neighboring groups.
- Choose Fill for a square you know is filled, Empty × for a known gap, or Erase to clear your mark.
- Compare crossing rows and columns until the pattern is complete. Correct filled squares finish the puzzle; you do not have to mark every remaining gap.
An easy five-square example
A five-square row with the clue 3 1 must contain three filled squares, one gap, and one filled square. That uses the entire row, so no guessing is needed. Look for fully determined lines like this, then use those squares to narrow down the crossing columns.

Before your next puzzle
Which nonogram should a beginner try?
Start with a Gentle 4×4 puzzle. The board is small enough to compare every row and column without much scrolling. Move to a 5×5 board when group lengths and the gaps between groups feel familiar.
